What Are Your Weekend Plans?

Well, I got to tell you the mountain is really in good shape, we have plenty of coverage and more snow is expected next week.  I recommend checking out some of the groomers bright and early, with these temperatures the corduroy is really laying nice and very soft.  Get yourself a mid-temperature wax and head on up to the slopes for a Good Day at Northstar.  Do yourself a dance, make a little love, and get down tonight with all your snow dances because if this next system sitting off of Hawaii collides with the Artic front moving our way, we could potentially experience Miracle March on the first day of the month.  You know me, I am very optimistic I think we’ll see 2 more feet of snow by Wednesday morning if all pans out.  Wahoo more powder runs!  Right now there is precipitation coming in all week, just not too sure what to expect beyond Tuesday at this point.  Be sure to check back as the storm approaches or whenever you feel like checking the blog out. 

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, “The Park Line on Pinball if Freaking Sweet!”  There are so many different jumps, rails, and boxes, all depending on what you are in the mood for.  If you want to start smaller or just try a new trick then check out the Burton Progression Park, a ton of fun in a small way.  There is a fun Medium sized park right under Vista Express, if you are brave enough to put on a show for the lift riders.  There is only way way to describe the Superpipe, “It Rocks!”  I’m taking the day off tomorrow, so I’ll have another update for you Sunday.

There is a big system sitting off of the Pacific Coast and gaining moisture, we should start seeing the effects Saturday night through Monday.  We are talking about 2 to 3 feet by Monday!  Yeah-hoo the powder days are still among us, I’m definitely ready for another helping!  I’m giving you a heads up that Monday should be the day, so get your work excuses in order early and prepare for another epic day at Northstar.  Luckily I don’t have to call in, I’m already here they force me to check out the conditions so I can tell you how great it is out there.  I can’t believe they make me do that, what a bummer(jk).  The Superpipe is really in great shape and cut on a regular basis, so come on out and ride those 17 foot walls.  In case you missed their stellar performance earlier in the season, check out Mellow Yellow and their safety message below.  I should have another update for you in the morning and some park footage.

THE DEW TOUR COMES TO AN END.....

Neither wind, nor rain, nor sleet, nor snow could keep the Dew Tour Superpipe Men's and Women's Snowboard finalists from their chosen path to shred the pipe today. The weather presented a bit of a challenge for the athletes competing. The visibility was rough and the snow/rain/slush just kept dumping. The crowd was stoked and soggy but toughed it out until the end for both men's and women's finals.

The gals showed the superpipe no mercy today. They pushed it each run throwing big airs and taking some pretty hard hits. Sierra-t-Tahoe's Elena Hight held nothing back in her final runs comin' out 3rd, While Kelly Clark took first overall to grab the Dew Cup, Torah Bright took first in the final Superpipe for the tour. 

The guys were hucking massive airs and pulling out all the stops today despite weather and snow conditions. Mason Aguirre took first in the Superpipe Final beating out Shaun White and Scott Lego. A huge upset for Shaun, the crowd was totally stoked for this kid who had one of the best runs of the comp.  Shaun White did take the Slopestyle and Superpipe overall for this 3 series event, as usual congrats Shaun.

So that's it ladies and gentlemen for the 2009 Winter Dew Tour. Hope you got out here and enjoyed all the goings-on on the mountain and in the Village. The really, really, really, really....really good looking and extremely talented athletes may be gone and you will no longer be able to stand at the base of the pipe in an attempt to get on camera and launch your modeling career, but everything else epic about Northstar-at-Tahoe remains and it's now at your disposal.

On another note, I just want to say thanks to everyone involved in this massive event. It takes a lot, from a lot of people to make something like this happen and everyone has done a phenomenal job!

Also, apologies for the lack of a video today, Chris (who has been shooting all the events for the blog and doing a smashing job!) was not able to shoot today due to forces outside of his control.

...I still love Mountain Dew

TANNER HALL SNAGS FREESKI SUPERPIPE DEW CUP AND FINAL!

The Freeski Superpipe battle between Tanner Hall and Simon Dumont came to an end last night with Tanner Hall emerging the victor winning the Freeski Superpipe Final and taking home the DEW CUP as well. Dumont's final run left him with a lingering smile at the base of the pipe, but not for long. Hall nailed his last run with a massive 1260, to a huge right 900, into an ally-oop flat 360 japan air and then a switch 900 with a grab. It was ridiculous! The crowd, athletes and announcers were going crazy. In the end Tanner scored a 93.75, Simon Dumont finished with a close 92.50 and Colby James West placed third with a 87.00. It was a great finish to the last Freeski Superpipe competition of the 2009 Winter Dew Tour!

Now, on to today. If you've listen to the weather report then you know it is slushing up here, but no worries! Throw on your waterproof duds (or a trash bag), trudge up here (no whining), and root on these amazing guys and gals as they rip the walls of the Superpipe for men's and women's Snowboard Superpipe Finals kicking off at 12pm. Then stick around for the awards ceremony it the Village from 4:30-5:30 this evening as these athletes take home their well deserved DEW CUPS!

FREESKI SLOPESTYLE: Tom Wallish WINS FINAL, PK Hunder Wins FIRST OVERALL

Today the final Freeski Slopestyle run, of the final stop of the 2009 Winter Dew Tour came to a close with Per-Kristian Hunder coming out the overall winner in Freeski Slopestyle, with Alexis Godbout overall 2nd and Bobby Brown (rocking his final run to Spice Girls, 'Tell Me What Ya Want') taking 3rd overall. The winner of the Men's Final Freeski Slopestyle toady was Tom Wallisch. With blue skies overhead, fans and onlookers let out whistles and cheers for all the competitors who have pushed it at every stop on the Dew Tour!

Tonight, bundle up, jump in the Gondola (it's FREE) and get to the superpipe for the Men's Superpipe Freeski Final 6pm-7pm TONIGHT! The Day Lodge will be open if you're in need of refreshments or sustenance. Watch Simon Dumont, Justin Dorey and Tanner Hall rip the walls of the pipe one last time!

Torstein WINS MEN's SNOWBOARD SLOPE, Sierra-at-Tahoe's Jamie Anderson WINS WOMEN'S SNOWBOARD SLOPE!

Well, if you bet on White to win overall, hope you bet a lot. If you didn't bet on him....good for you for not being swayed by the masses. If you weren't there to watch it all unfold, you should have been. If you were there you can attest to the unreal airs and wicked tricks these guys were pulling. Yes, I said wicked. Northstar-at-Tahoe's team rider Chas killed it taking third in this last event. Torstein was definitely the crowd pleaser though, finishing with a frontside 270, a backside 900 with a melon grab and a switch backside 1260 on the last jump. It was rad!

Sierra-at-Tahoe's Jamie Anderson took first in Women's Snowboard Slopestyle with her family and friends cheerin' her on. She was stoked to win here she said, with a second overall finish. Spencer O'brien came away with second in this last event, but took away Gold with overall points. She said she was nervous coming into this last event, but to clinch the Cup was awesome!

The after party in the Village was like nothing we've ever seen at Northstar! The steeze was epic and the PBR plentiful. Tweak Bird got the crowd pumped and Common brought it up a few more notches and rocked the Village! We'll have pics and video for you so you can relive the rager....or just pretend you were there.

Sun, Slopestyle, & Superpipe

The weather and snow conditions couldn't have been better for the first day of competition. Both men and women killed it in Snowboard Slopestyle prelims!

The girls rocked it today! South Lake Tahoe's Jamie Anderson came into the preliminaries strong and came out first, with Janna Meyen-Weatherby, Chanelle Sladics, Torah Bright and Christina Curry following close behind. The guys didn't show too badly either, hucking big air and working in some technical runs. Andreas Wiig pulled out in front to grab first in preliminaries, but the rest of the guys were right on his heels...flat tires all the way. Get up here for tomorrow's Final! It's going to be a battle. 

Mid-Mountain was throwin' up cheers today for Men's Freeski Superpipe preliminaries. The pipe was looking smooth and the guys were too...what?! Yeah that's right. Mike Diddle took home the highest score with a 90.50, but the rest of the qualifying group didn't give him much room to relax. Finals for Men's Freeski Superpipe will be Saturday 6pm-7pm. And no excuses for not being there, because the Gondola will be FREE for this event!

What's going on tomorrow night? A lot. And it's going to be awesome. Autograph signing at Elite Feet, pre-concert party at Butterbox and TC's (with food, drink, and DJ) and the FREE concert with Tweak Bird opening for Common!

I can't tell if it was the amazing weather, or excitement that comes with a competition between the best in the freeskiing and snowboarding world, or the gallons Mountain Dew being doled out, but everyone up on the hill and in the Village today was stoked! Friday will definitely top today with bluebird skies, finals for Men's and Women's Snowboard Slopestyle, and post-competition festivities in the Village!

Gearing up for the Dew Tour!

Some of the best ski and snowboard professionals are strapping on their ski and snowboard boots for the preliminary snowboard Slopestyle and skiing Superpipe this morning.  In case you haven’t heard, the Dew Tour Northstar Resort is hosting is the 3rd and final stop for this winter event series.  Meaning; we should see athletes giving more than their all as they pursue a piece of the 1.5 million dollar prize purse during the next 3 days.  I will be heading up to get a piece of the action on video, Lauren and myself will keep you updated on this event.  Be sure to check out all the DEW TOUR information, for things like results from the other 2 resorts, current standings, etc.

We have seen over 7 feet of snow in the last 10 days, things are looking really good up here!  I hope you had a chance to dip into some of that fresh powder the last week, the snow was truly unbelievable.  Today is the first true Blue Bird Powder Day, so hopefully we’ll see you up here.

GAME TIME!

Today Northstar-at-Tahoe got a sneak preview of what's to come this weekend for the Dew Tour with athletes throwin' down on the slopestyle and halfpipe! Riders like Molly Aguirre, Louie Vito and Andreas Wiig (to name a few) were out today enjoying the sun and down time before prelims kick off tomorrow along with Mid-Mountain festivities. The Village ramps up Friday with athlete autograph signing at Elite Feet and a sick pre-concert party at Butterbox and TC's Pub for the FREE Tweak Bird and Common concert Friday night (GET HERE EARLY IT'S GONNA BE AWESOME!!!) So put on your stoke boots and come out to watch the best in the world battle it out at the final stop of the 2009 Winter Dew Tour!

I Can't Get Enough of that Powder!

49 inches has dropped on our mountain in the last 7 days, and it is still snowing!  Snowboarding this last week has been like a dream, fresh powder runs everywhere and incredible pillow landings.  I thought I had explored every run and line here at Northstar, there was definitely some new terrain I found here in the last week on Lookout Mountain.  Yesterday was the best day of the year for me and tomorrow is supposed to be the same, if not better.  I hope work is letting you take President’s Day off, because tomorrow is expected to be nothing short of EPIC!!!  I am so stoked to see all of this snow, I mean the spring-like conditions were fun before, but now the snow is more than I could have asked for.  Click the picture below for a quick video, you can probably tell the difference between 2 days ago and yesterday!  Either way, it was still good riding.
