Keep On Dancing, Here It Comes……

Another series of storms will be coming into Tahoe in a couple of days!!! Get ready for some more powder days, we should start seeing consistent snowfall break over the Sierra Crest Tuesday and continue through the week.  I would bookmark the Sierra Avalanche Center Website, if you are interested in The Summit temperatures are supposed to remain near normal all week, we could see a little above normal temps at Mid-Mountain, just a little heavy below 7,000 feet.  It should all be snow!  A little trough will be coming in today and tomorrow, but not much in the way of snow accumulation, we could see a few inches before the bigger one rolls on in.

 

Get your waxes on, and let’s go shred some powder next week!  I still plan on hiking out Sawtooth Ridge for an off-piste powder video, the timing hasn’t been right so far, but very soon.  My tip for the week; check out White Rabbit around 10:30 to 11:00 on Friday or Saturday, there should be some good fresh powder then.  When you all done, head over to the Overlook Bar for the best happy hour specials after 3:00, only 2 dollars for a 16oz PBR!  Have you sent me your guess for our total snowfall this season, I am only going to take everyone’s estimate for the next ten days.  Only 8 people have submitted their guess, the person who is the closest will get a lift ticket for this or next season.  I guessed 470, when our annual average is 350 inches, right now we are at 244 total inches. 

Northstar Riders Make The Cut….

The Winter X Games Slopestyle and Superpipe qualifying rounds are over, with three Northstar team riders; Chas Guldemond, Eero Ettalla, and Elena Hight.  I would expect to see Eero throwing a switch double back flip, Chase laying that incredibly smooth style, both riders will be throwing their best in the Big Air and Slopestyle event.  Get ready for Elena to yank out back to back 900’s!  Jussi Oksanen will also be representing in the Slopestyle Event, this will be his 11th X Game event!  Check out the X Games for more on these riders.

Premiering tonight on MTV2 is the TransWorld SNOWboarding’s Team Shoot Out.  Check out and get behind the scenes of the first-ever Shoot Out as Rome, Burton, DC, and Forum team battles!  Each team duked it out face-to-face to claim their fame for the best tricks, video parts, and still shots, all in one week.  Who rised above the challenge, who buckled under pressure, there is only one way to find out, check it out tonight at 11:00pm!

Still Snowing......

9 more inches fell in the last 24 hours, and the storm is stalling longer than most weather modules were showing.  Yesterday the snow levels stayed relatively high, around 6,500 feet, so as you can imagine the snow was very heavy.  The temperatures are a little cooler today and the snow levels seem to be closer to lake level, so the snow is a bit quicker than yesterday.  Don’t get me wrong, it is still pretty heavy.  We might have some cooler spring skiing ahead of us this week, partly cloudy skies most of the week with a little precipitation here and there. 

 
 

You probably know, but we’ve seen a 9 day storm cycle, tomorrow’s accumulation totals might put us over the 100 inch mark for this storm system!  This mark is measure at our Summit, but to put in prospective; Truckee CA’s record for a month of snow was 112 inches in December, back in 1992.  It looks like we are doing pretty good so far, especially making just about everything skiable.

What A Great Week!

Over 6 feet of fresh snow fell this last week and more on the way tomorrow and Tuesday!  We have so much to offer right now, Mother Nature has been so kind giving us consistent cool temperatures and a plethora of snow.  We are already have seen 228 inches this season, leaving us only 122 inches behind our annual average, and yes we still have nearly 3 months left of skiing/riding!  The weather has been beautiful, the skies ambience has been dominated with nearly every shade of a brilliant blue.  The scattered clouds are like little cotton balls floating in a mist of blue, dropping snow while the sun shines ever so brightly on the hillside of snow.  What a picture perfect scene up here the last few days!

January hasn’t been dissapointing yet, more snow is on the way, hopefully nearly everyday!  The video attached is of two employees up here; Aaron Rosen, and Wes Sherriff.

We Should Call Today An Official Holiday…..

Another 28 inches fell on The Summit in the last 24 hours, and you guessed it, we are expecting between 6 and 16 inches around 8,000 feet today, then more tonight.  So far, 209 inches this season alone, have you sent me your season guesses for your chance to win a lift ticket for this or next season?  This January storm has not been disapointing!  The recent powder has been very cold, meaning the snow is lighter and a little fluffier than typical Tahoe storms.  My favorite!  The whole mountain is incredible right now, if you haven’t already, you should experience some of the different areas by checking out our gladed tree runs.  These are really great tree lines, but please be aware you do need advanced/expert skills to really navigate these areas.  If you are newer to the sport or don’t get up much, check out some of the runs off of the Mt Pluto area.  There really are some great trails over there for almost all levels of skiers/riders.

These storms are huge!  With that in mind, please practice good safety habits.  I encourage everyone to check out some helpful hints such as; Deep Powder Safety, Winter Driving Tips, and our Winter Road Conditions and Highway Cams.  Everyone should get  a chance to come enjoy this great powder, the forecast is not looking as intense this weekend, so if your off work, the trek here shouldn’t be as extreme.  Some forecast modules have been completely wrong, so in any case be prepared for winter weather.

One Very Big Powdery Smile!

47 inches fell on our hard packed base in the last 7 days, with 28 of those inches graced our Summit in the last 48 hours.  Powder days are here!  I recommend trying one, if not all 5 of our gladed tree areas today if you possess advanced or expert riding/skiing skills.  If you want to ride the deep powder, you are going to want to stay steep, The Backside and Lookout Mountain is where it is at!  If you are newer to the sport, pick one of the greens on the front side of the mountain, most of the time, the green trails are groomed last, meaning less powder than the intermediate and advanced runs.  Please remember the snow is building and getting very deep, we recommend everyone skis or rides with a buddy.  Be sure to check out a few Deep Powder Safety Tips! 

 

I am heading up the mountain with my video camera, if you see me up there, throw up a big wave of powder and look for yourself on the next post.

Ohhhh The Anticipation……

Get ready because here it comes!  The 10 day storm cycle will be hitting Tahoe Sunday, with rapid accumulation expected Late Sunday through Wednesday.  1 to 2 feet is in the daily forecast for 4 days, starting Sunday!!!  Beyond that is another 6 days of storm cycles that could potentially drop as much or more snow as we are expecting by Wednesday.  We are talking possibly 6 to 12 feet within the next two weeks!  The powder skiing will be epic, but be ready for blizzard conditions with ridge gusts up to 100mph.  I encourage everyone to have awinter preparedness kit at home and in their vehicle.  This storm has the potential to knock out power, close roads, etc., I hope everyone gets up here for the great snow, but please remember to take extra time and get here safely!

Come on out tonight for the Olympic Heritage Rail Jam at the base of the Big Springs Gondola.  The set-up looks fun and in a great location for spectators, so get here early and grab a good seat by the Chocolate Bar.  Be sure to see what B.A. has to say about this storm, I am really looking forward to some serious powder days!

Old Man Winter Breathing Down Our Necks

18 fresh inches fell on The Summit in the last 24 hours, “just what the doctor ordered!  All your snow dances, songs, prayers, rhymes, or whatever your ritual may be, it paid off!  I suggest keeping tapping those feet, because the big storm will be making its way into the Tahoe Region Sunday.  This one has the potential for 4 to 6 feet of snow; many days of powder are still ahead of us this January.  My recommendation for the day is; check out the Sugar Pine Glade on Lookout Mountain.

Olympic Heritage at Northstar Resort

Come on out this Sunday, January 10, 2009 for the History of Biathlon Presentation & Demonstration Race at the Cross Country Telemark and Snowshoe Center.  You can check out a free demonstration in The Village at Northstar from 10am to 11am, and then be sure to get to the cross country center by noon, so you can trek on up to the Biathlon Range near Sawmill Lake for the mock demonstration.  If you haven’t visited our Cross Country Telemark and Snowshoe Center for some snowshoeing, striding, or skate-skiing, I definitely recommend it.

On Friday January 15th, we are continuing to celebrate Olympic Heritage with the Northstar-at-Tahoe Resort Olympic Heritage Rail Jam.  It has been 50 years since we hosted the Olympic Winter Games in Lake Tahoe.  Come on out and help us celebrate Olympic spirit by watching or participating in a rail jam to see how far we’ve come since the games 50 years ago!  If you want to compete, you need to get to Butterbox before 6:00pm, they are limiting this event to only 25 athletes, and the cost is only $5.  The great thing is this event will be at the base of the Big Springs Gondola, next to the Chocolate Bar.

Dance, Sing, And Pray....

A Few Things Coming Up…..

Not much for weather the next few days, more like sunny spring ski conditions.  A little drizzle of rain froze into a nice layer of sheet ice overnight, and a trace of snow on The Summit.  Check out what B.A. has to say!  The conditions are still holding, I know everyone is antsy for that supreme powder day, especially since we have a substantial base.  Can you imagine? 3 or so feet blanketing the Tahoe Region, we would be in a Haven of powder.  I need all of you to start dancing, recite your snow prayer song, or whatever it takes to bring this next system in on Monday and Tuesday.  We are expecting some cooler temperatures to push the warmer than normal temps we’ve been experiencing this week.  Yes, the storm door is opening once again!  Seriously, we need the dances, prayers, and songs, because we could potentially have many powder days ahead of us this January.

 
 

Come on out and check out the History of Biathlon Presentation & Demonstration Race taking place on January 10, 2010.  Come visit us to learn about this growing sport!  Join us for a free presentation in the Village at Northstar™ from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.  Mike Karch will review the history of biathlon from original pictographs found in prehistoric Finland through modern day Olympics.  Want to talk about some serious athletes; well you’re not going to want to miss this presentation.

 

Our first big freestyle event is taking place on January 15th in The Village at Northstar; we will be hosting Olympic Heritage Rail Jam.  If you are thinking of competing, you might want to get here early; we are limiting this event to only 25 participants.  Registration begins at 6pm in front of Butterbox, the warm-ups start at 6 as well.  I hope you are able to make it to one of these Olympic Heritage Events!
